Bio

Matt Taber is a professional independent director based in the Cayman Islands. With 25 years of legal and governance experience, he serves on the boards of a wide range of investment funds, investment management firms, and digital asset projects. His practice spans traditional hedge and private equity funds, distressed and special situations vehicles, and the oversight of Web3 foundations and decentralised organisations.

Before moving into director services, Matt was a partner at a leading Cayman Islands law firm, where he advised clients on the formation, operation, and restructuring of investment structures across diverse asset classes. He worked with both emerging managers and global institutions, guiding them through market cycles, transitions, and regulatory change. Earlier in his career, he gained extensive funds experience at several leading Cayman Islands law firms. He began his legal training in London, focusing on capital markets and mergers and acquisitions, which gave him a strong grounding in transactional and corporate governance matters.

Matt has contributed to the development of Cayman’s legal and regulatory framework through service on regulatory and legislative boards and working groups. He has advised on traditional fund structures as well as some of the earliest Web3 foundations, DAOs, and decentralised projects spanning DeFi, blockchain infrastructure, and token ecosystems. This dual expertise enables him to bridge the gap between established finance and digital innovation, bringing both legal skills and strategic insight to the boardroom.

He is admitted as an attorney-at-law in the Cayman Islands and as a solicitor in England and Wales (non-practising). He is also a registered director with the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority. Matt contributes to industry bodies, roundtables, and regulatory consultations on governance best practices, and has been an active voice in shaping the future of investment and digital asset oversight in the Cayman Islands.
